Rachel Johannson, a former property and casualty underwriter, has been in the insurance industry for nearly a decade. “I always had a keen interest in technology and cyber insurance, but I found it a hard sector to get into due to the lack of cyber experience.” She began her journey with the CCIS course through a fantastic opportunity at Onda looking for candidates with her background. This was her gateway to the cybersecurity and insurance industry.
Novice To Certified Expert
Before beginning her work at Onda and starting her CCIS journey, Johannson had a clear lack of cyber knowledge. Despite everything she had learned from colleagues and mentors since joining her new team, she felt she needed to learn more and wanted to acquire official certification and recognition. “The CCIS gave me the confidence and base knowledge to succeed in my new role with Onda and my diploma is proof of the hard work I put in to become officially certified.” The CCIS course was able to bolster her professional standing, allowing for certifiable recognition of her newly acquired knowledge and skills on cybersecurity measures and cyber risk.
Applying CCIS Theory In Real Life
The cyber insurance industry is constantly developing and continued education is crucial for risk management. Reflecting on real-world scenarios, Johannson recounted a noteworthy instance where she implemented concepts from the CCIS course to help a client. She received a submission from a medium-sized law firm seeking cyber insurance, recognizing the inherent cyber risks due to sensitive customer data. By applying Onda’s underwriting guidelines and considering the industry sector, revenue, data sensitivity, and risk management practices, Johannson swiftly assessed the firm’s insurability. “This experience reinforced the importance of continuous learning and proactive risk management in cyber insurance.”
Staying Up-to-Date with Underwriting
In the fast-evolving landscape of insurance and underwriting, it can be hard to stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and regulatory changes. We asked Johannson for her three main strategies to foster continuous learning and expertise enhancement.
- I prioritize ongoing education and professional development by regularly attending seminars, workshops, webinars, and conferences related to insurance, underwriting, and cybersecurity, to learn from industry experts, gain insights into emerging trends, and exchange knowledge with peers.
- I try to attend as many networking events as I can, as well as forums, and LinkedIn groups related to insurance, underwriting, and cybersecurity. Connecting with other professionals in the field has allowed me to share insights and learn from other people’s experiences.
- At Onda, we peer review our underwriting regularly; we foster a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing within the business.
As Johannson continues to advance cyber underwriting, we extend our best wishes and proudly welcome her into our community of graduates at the Cyber Insurance Academy.
